Your Place to Re-Shape Kandy

I've had a deep passion for urban planning and geography since childhood, which, combined with a strong attachment to places like my hometown Kandy, has shaped my career path. This synergy inspired the creation of the Kandy Planning Lab—a platform to promote sustainable urban transformation.

Urban development in Sri Lanka is largely car-centric, characterized by sprawl, poor pedestrian infrastructure, disconnected road networks, and weak planning regulations. While many acknowledge the poor state of our cities, few grasp the root causes or feel empowered to act. I believe that change begins with grassroots efforts driven by informed goals and public awareness. By learning from global examples of successful urban transformation, even small, community-led initiatives can spark meaningful, lasting change.

Kandy is a beautiful, self-contained city with a rich heritage and strong culture. I grew up nearby and saw both its historic charm and the challenges of rapid urban growth. When I compare Kandy to Colombo—where roads, buildings along Galle Road, and walking paths are better planned—I feel our city deserves the same level of thoughtful design.

Too many people tell me “Kandy is far” or assume they have to go to Colombo for everything. That made me wonder: why should daily tasks force us out of our own city? I realized most people don’t understand what makes a self-contained city special.

It’s unfair that many people who love Kandy must leave for work; we need more local jobs and better infrastructure. (Maybe not practical, but just to try encouraging companies to come and open branches here.) I joined Kandy Planning Lab because I want to work with others to help our city plan wisely, create opportunities at home, and improve everyday life for everyone.
